Andrew Wiggins is a Canadian professional basketball player who has represented the Minnesota Timberwolves (2014–2020) and the Golden State Warriors (2020–Present), as a small forward, in the National Basketball Association (NBA). With the Golden State Warriors, he won the NBA Championship in 2022. He was also included in the annual NBA ‘All-Star Game’ in 2022. He was picked 1st overall in the 1st round of the 2014 NBA Draft, by the Cleveland Cavaliers. This had made him just the 2nd Canadian ever to be selected 1st overall in an NBA Draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers had traded him in the pre-season to the Minnesota Timberwolves and he never got to play for the franchise that had picked him 1st overall in the draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers would have rued trading him though, as he went on to win the ‘NBA Rookie of the Year’ award in 2015. He was also included in the ‘NBA All-Rookie First Team’ that year. Representing Canada, he had won the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2010 Hamburg FIBA (Fédération internationale de basket-ball) World Under-17 Cup, the 2012 São Sebastião do Paraíso FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship, and the 2015 Mexico City FIBA AmeriCup.

Andrew began playing organized basketball when he was 9 years old. He was 5 ft 7 in (1.70 m) tall at that time. He dunked a basketball for the first time when he was about 13 years old. About a year later, he had grown to 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m).

He was born and brought up in Canada but had attended his last 2 years of high school in the United States so that he could enter the American sports system which would make it easier for him to pursue his dream of a career in the NBA.

In his sophomore year (2010–11), he led Vaughan Secondary School’s AAAA basketball team to a 44–1 record and the Ontario provincial championship. In the championship game, he scored 25 points and recorded 13 rebounds.

Following his high school exploits, he was named the 2013 ‘Naismith Prep Player of the Year’ (given annually to high school basketball’s top male and female player), the 2013 Gatorade ‘National Player of the Year’, and the 2013 ‘Mr. Basketball USA’.

In March 2014, he scored 41 points against West Virginia University, the most for a Big 12 Conference freshman since 2008. For his exploits in his freshman, and only, year of college basketball, he was named the ‘Big 12 Freshman of the Year’ in 2014. That year, he was also included in the First-Team All-Big 12. The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas. It consists of 10 full-member universities and is a part of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for all sports.
